Who Are We?

Studies have shown that problem gambling results in various negative consequences, not just for the gambler, but also for the people around them and their communities. Here is what we are doing to reduce these gambling harms:

Our Mission

We live in a world where many people have gambled or been affected by the gambling habits of others. Yet there exists a gap between what people know about gambling and what scientific research has found.

Our goal is to fill this gap. But how? We do it by relying on studies that explain why people gamble, including the internal factors that may not be obvious to onlookers. As such, we are able to equip our readers with knowledge and introduce them to a perspective that helps them empathize with those affected by problem gambling.

Whether we are reviewing books, journal articles or case studies, our goal remains the same – to foster understanding. Rather than passing judgment or pushing our readers to think in a specific way, we encourage them to consider all the factors that can affect a person’s motivations and behavior. It all comes down to informed awareness, which is central to all our work.

About SBGP

Ran by researchers who are out to inform, our site shines in the following ways:

  • We rely on evidence. All our work hinges on academic sources in behavioral sciences. What’s more, we rely on open-access and peer-reviewed sources for added accuracy.
  • We compare real experiences to academic frameworks. Do gamblers exhibit the same patterns showcased in studies? Our work goes into real-life comparisons, thus enabling our readers to understand how gambling dynamics play out in real life.
  • We leave out the jargon. Academic terms may come easily to researchers, but they can be hard to understand for people who are not working in these fields. That is why we summarize all our studies into simple articles that all our readers can understand.

In whatever we do, we focus on simplicity, accuracy, and practicality. This way, our articles are not just numbers and words, but rather, they are insights that you can use to inform yourself and others about gambling.

Our Mission

We believe that problem gambling is not a moral failing, nor is it something that people choose to engage in out of their own free will. Instead, it is a result of different internal and external factors that affect people to varying degrees. However, this fact is not always obvious to people, especially those who have been affected by the actions of a problem gambler or those who are experiencing problem gambling themselves. And, unfortunately, this misunderstanding or lack of information can lead to blame and shame, where people affected by these factors think that they are to blame.

That is why we focus on sharing knowledge with our readers. When people understand why people gamble, they are able to humanize their experiences. And instead of passing judgment on them, they seek to understand and help them. We believe that the more we take away the shame around gambling, the more people can open up to learning more about it, and the more they can take steps towards adopting healthier habits. Slowly, we can tackle the problem at its roots and help people around the world.
